The plateau drive from Thangu to Gurudongmar

From Thangu at about 3,900 m the road climbs past army camps into open country of brown hills, gravel flats and snow peaks. In good light the colours change from purple to gold. You may see yaks, and occasionally wild animals at a distance.
Photography of army installations is forbidden; your driver will tell you where you can stop. Keep window stops short, stay warm and keep drinking water.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Can I photograph along the plateau road?
Landscape photography is generally fine at stops your driver chooses. Photographing army camps, vehicles, bridges or soldiers is not allowed and can lead to problems. When in doubt, ask the driver. Drones are not allowed anywhere in this border area.
Is the road rough?
Parts are rough, with gravel, stream crossings and patches of snow or ice. SUVs with experienced local drivers handle it every day. People prone to motion sickness should eat lightly and sit in front. Ask the driver to slow down if anyone feels sick.
Will I see wildlife on the way?
Sometimes. Yaks are common, and lucky travellers spot animals such as blue sheep at a distance. Do not leave the vehicle to chase sightings; the driver must keep to time and permitted stops. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens if you hope to see animals at a distance.
