The walk to Tholung Monastery in Upper Dzongu

Tholung Monastery stands in forest high in Upper Dzongu. It is known for keeping old relics and religious objects of Sikkim, which are shown to the public during a festival called Kamsel, traditionally held every few years. Outside those times the monastery is quiet and simple.
Access is by road toward the upper villages and then on foot. Distances and trail conditions change with landslides, so plan it with your homestay and a local guide, and check whether extra permission is needed for Upper Dzongu.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Can I see the Tholung relics?
Usually only during the Kamsel festival, when they are brought out for public viewing. Dates are set by the monastery and are not annual. Ask your homestay if a festival falls during your stay. Outside festival times you can still visit the monastery itself.
Is a guide necessary?
Yes. Trails in Upper Dzongu are not well marked, and landslides change them. A local guide also knows permit and village rules. Your host can arrange one. Expect to pay about ₹1,000–1,500 a day, and agree the route and timing the evening before.
How fit do I need to be?
Reasonably fit. Expect steep forest paths, river crossings on bridges and long climbs. It is not a high-altitude trek, but it is tiring. Walk a few hours most days in the weeks before your trip, and carry water, snacks and a rain layer.
