Walk to Ramitey Dara above the Teesta

The path to Ramitey Dara climbs gently through forest and small clearings above the village. At the top an open ridge looks down on the Teesta valley, with the river curling back and forth on its way south. Locals count anywhere from 11 to 14 bends; on a clear morning you can trace it for many kilometres.
Behind the river the hills of Sikkim rise in layers, and on the best days the snow peaks line the far horizon. Morning is clearest; by afternoon haze often fills the valley.
Some homestays arrange a jeep for part of the way; walking is more enjoyable in dry weather.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Ramitey Dara from Sillery Gaon?
It is about 3 km from the village, roughly an hour's walk each way at an easy pace. Part of the route can be done by jeep if you prefer. The path is mostly gentle, with a few steeper bits near the top. Ask your host to point out the start or send someone with you.
How many bends of the Teesta can I see from Ramitey Dara?
Locals and guidebooks give different numbers, usually between 11 and 14, depending on how you count and how clear the day is. What matters is the view: the river looping back on itself far below, with the hills of Sikkim behind. Go in the morning for the clearest air.
Is Ramitey Dara worth it in the monsoon?
Usually not. From June to September the valley is often filled with cloud and the path is slippery and full of leeches. You may get brief gaps, but the view is often hidden. Go between October and May, ideally from October to February.
