Sunrise from Thambi viewpoint

Your driver will want to leave Zuluk around 4.30 to 5 am, depending on the season. The road climbs through the hairpins in the dark, and you reach the viewpoint as the sky begins to lighten. On clear mornings the Kangchenjunga range lights up pink and then gold across the northwest horizon.
Turn round and you see the road you have just climbed, laid out in loops on the slope below. It is cold at this hour in every season, often below zero, so wear everything warm you have. Some homestays send a flask of tea; otherwise carry one.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Thambi viewpoint from Zuluk?
It is about 14 km above Zuluk by road, roughly 40–50 minutes' drive through the hairpin bends. Most drivers include it in the circuit on the way to Nathang. For sunrise you leave Zuluk in the dark, so agree the time with your driver the evening before.
Is Kangchenjunga visible from Thambi viewpoint?
Yes, on clear days, especially at sunrise between October and April. The range appears across the northwest horizon. Cloud often builds by mid-morning, and from June to September the peaks are hidden most days. The zigzag road below is visible in most weather except thick fog.
Can I walk to Thambi viewpoint?
Walking up is possible for fit, acclimatised walkers, but it is a long, steep climb on a road used by army trucks, and you would miss sunrise unless you started in the middle of the night. Most travellers drive up and walk down part of the way to enjoy the loops at their own pace.
