Do Drul Chorten and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

Two of Gangtok's most rewarding sights stand a few minutes apart in Deorali: a large white stupa ringed with prayer wheels and a museum of Tibetan Buddhist art, manuscripts and statues.

Do Drul Chorten was built in 1945 under the guidance of Trulshik Rinpoche, a senior lama of the Nyingma school. Pilgrims walk clockwise around it, turning 108 prayer wheels set into the surrounding wall. Two large statues of Guru Rinpoche sit in the shrine halls beside it.

A short walk away, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology was founded in 1958 to study and preserve Tibetan and Sikkimese Buddhist culture. Its museum displays thangkas, bronzes, ritual objects and rare manuscripts, and the building itself is a fine example of traditional Sikkimese architecture. Check opening days before you go, as it closes on some holidays.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How far is Do Drul Chorten from MG Marg?

It is about 2 km south of MG Marg in the Deorali area, a ten-minute taxi ride for about ₹150–200. The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is a short walk downhill from the chorten, and the lower station of the Gangtok ropeway is close by, so the three fit into one morning.

Can I take photographs inside the Institute of Tibetology?

Photography inside the museum galleries is usually not allowed, to protect the objects and out of respect. You can photograph the building and its garden. At Do Drul Chorten, photographs outside are fine, but ask before taking pictures inside the shrine rooms or of people praying.

What is the etiquette at Do Drul Chorten?

Walk clockwise around the chorten, turning the prayer wheels with your right hand. Dress modestly, remove shoes and hats before entering shrine rooms, and do not point your feet at altars when sitting. Small donations are welcome but never expected. Keep your voice low, as many visitors come to pray.
