Sunset at the Lali Guras viewpoint

Lali guras is the Nepali name for the red rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal. The viewpoint of that name stands above Samsing with open views over the tea gardens, the Murti valley and, on clear evenings, the Dooars plains fading into haze.
Come an hour before sunset with a flask of tea and a warm layer. On clear winter mornings or evenings the snow peaks of the eastern Himalaya can sometimes be seen to the north-east. Walk down before dark or arrange for your car to wait.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
What does Lali Guras mean?
In Nepali, lali guras means red rhododendron, the tree that flowers on many hills of the eastern Himalaya in spring. The viewpoint takes its name from it. Most Samsing families speak Nepali, so you will hear the word often.
Can I see snow peaks from Samsing?
On very clear days in winter, after rain has cleaned the air, distant snow peaks can sometimes be seen to the north and north-east. Most days the view is of tea, forest and the plains. Do not plan a trip only for mountain views.
Is it safe to walk back from Lali Guras after dark?
The road is quiet and narrow with steep edges, and wild animals sometimes cross it. Carry a torch, walk in a group, or arrange for your car or host to collect you. Better still, leave as the light fades.
