Morning walk around Sumendu Lake

Sumendu Lake is about 1.25 km long, with the Savitri Pushpaudyan garden on one side and pine woods on the other, linked by the arched Indreni Pul footbridge. The road around the lake is flat and easy, with benches along the way and a Debisthan temple on a small hill nearby.
In the early morning, mist hangs over the water and the town is quiet. On clear days Kangchenjunga shows on the horizon. Later you can hire a rowing boat or a pony. The lake is a calm, simple pleasure, and the walk is suitable for all ages. Bring a jacket for early starts.

Good to know
How long is the walk around Mirik Lake?
The road around Sumendu Lake is about 3.5 km and mostly flat. At an easy pace it takes 45 minutes to an hour, or longer with photo stops and a coffee. It is suitable for children and older travellers. Start at the footbridge near Krishnanagar and walk either way. Benches are spread around the loop.
Can I swim in Mirik Lake?
No, swimming is not allowed. The lake is managed for boating and walking only, and the water is deep in places. Stay on the paths and keep children away from unfenced edges. If you want to be on the water, hire a rowing boat with life jackets, which is safe and inexpensive.
Is Mirik Lake crowded?
Usually not, except on weekends and holidays in October, around Christmas and in May, when day-trippers from Siliguri arrive. Early mornings are always quiet. Even on busy days Mirik is far less crowded than Darjeeling. Midweek visits from November to March are the calmest, with clear skies and fewer visitors.
