The Gangtey nature trail across Phobjikha

The trail starts near the village of Semchubara, a little below Gangtey Goenpa, and follows a well-worn path through blue pine forest and across open grassland down to the valley floor. Prayer flags mark a small pass, and there are views across the marsh to the far ridges.
The walk ends at Khewang Lhakhang, a small temple on the eastern side, where your car can collect you. It takes 1.5–2 hours at an easy pace. In winter, keep to the path near the wetland so as not to disturb feeding cranes. In spring and summer, wild flowers fill the meadows.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How difficult is the Gangtey nature trail?
Easy. It is mostly downhill or level, about 1.5–2 hours, on a clear path through forest and grassland. Most people of reasonable fitness, including children and older walkers, manage it comfortably. The ground can be muddy after rain and frosty on winter mornings.
Do I need a guide for the nature trail?
You will already be travelling with a licensed guide in Phobjikha, as all tourists must outside Thimphu and Paro. Your guide can walk with you and arrange for the car to meet you at Khewang Lhakhang at the end. The path is well used and easy to follow.
Will I see cranes on the nature trail?
In winter, often yes, as the trail passes near feeding areas on the valley floor. Keep a respectful distance and do not leave the path. Binoculars help. Outside the October to February season there are no cranes, but the walk is still pleasant.
